Biography of Illya Zozulya

 

Illya Zozulya was born in Zaporozhye, Ukraine. In 1994 Illya has won 2nd  prize in the Zaporozhye city competition. And in 1995 he has won the 1st prize in the same competition. He has performed the Rachmaninov’s 1st piano concerto in the same year with Zaporozhye Symphony Orchestra.

 

In August 1995 Illya was selected to take part in the First International Summer Music School in western Ukraine where he had master classes with leading professors of the Kiev and Kharkov Conservatories as well as from overseas.

 

In September 1995 Illya became a student of  Professor Victor Makarov at the Kharkov Special Music School for gifted children. Professor Makarov had studied with Regina Horowitz, sister of the world famous pianist Vladimir Horowitz.

 

In March 1998 Illya took part in School of Performing Arts for gifted children in Kiev and performed at the Kiev Philharmonic Concert Hall shortly after. And in June 1998 Illya was invited to continue his studies with Professor Victor Makarov at the Australian Institute of Music in Sydney where he had received a full scholarship.

 

In 2002 Illya was granted a Distinguished Talent Permanent Residency Visa in Sydney, Australia. His visa application was endorsed by some of the Australia’s most prominent musicians and by the former Prime Minister of Australia.

 

In 2003 Illya has received his Bachelor Degree majoring in Classical Piano Performance.

 

Since arriving in Australia in June 1998 he has been awarded the Werner Baer Memorial Scholarship for pianists and was winner of the Recital Section (15-18 years) in the McDonalds Performing Arts Challenge.

 

Illya has performed in concerts in the Ukraine, in Government and Parliament houses in Sydney and performed in a “Prom” concert in Town Hall as part of the Festival of Sydney in January, 1999.  On 8th of March 1999 he gave his first recital in Sydney (St. Stephen’s Church), which was broadcast by SBS radio.

 

In May of 1999 he has got one gold and two silver medals in the Warringah Eisteddfod Competitions. In September 2000 Illya participated in Beethoven’s festival in Sydney where he had performed Beethoven’s 5th piano concerto with Balmain Symphony Orchestra. At the end of the same month he had played 2nd piano concerto by J. Brahms with Zaporozhye Symphony Orchestra (Ukraine). In 2002 he has performed Rachmaninoff’s 2nd piano concerto in Guam.

 

In March 2003 he participated in The Chopin Festival which was held at the Australian Institute of Music.

 

Illya has been teaching  piano for over 15 years at the Australian Institute of Music and in private studios around Sydney. In 2013 Illya has opened his own “European Piano Studio” in the Upper North Shore in Sydney.

 

Illya’s students were among the winners of some piano competitions around Sydney, have successfully received scholarships at private schools and were admitted to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music as well as regularly achieved and are achieving good results at the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) piano examinations.
